Buenos Aires, 20 September 2011 – In Asunción, on Tuesday, 13 September, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Slovenia in Buenos Aires, Tomaž Mencin, presented letters of credentials to the President of Paraguay, Fernando Lugo Méndez. Jorge Lara Castro, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Paraguay, also attended the ceremony. Prior to this, the Ambassador presented copies of his letters of credentials to the Deputy Minister, Manuel Maria Caceres, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The following day, Ambassador Mencin was received by the President of the Paraguayan Senate, Jorge Oviedo Matto, and the Chair of the Paraguayan Foreign Affairs Committee, Miguel Carrizosa. The conversation focused on the exchange of proposals to establish more intense cooperation between the two countries both in bilateral and multilateral areas.

The Paraguayan side was particularly interested in the possibilities offered by the Slovenian economy. They also pointed out they would like stronger cooperation among the scientific institutions of the two countries and more cultural exchanges. Branislava Sušnik (1920–1996), an anthropologist born in Medvode and one of the most esteemed scientists in Paraguay, represented an important link between the nations of the two countries. In Paraguay, Sušnik was for years engaged in research of Paraguayan ethnic groups and published more than 150 articles and books on the topic. She also founded, and was director of, an ethnographic museum.

Since 2010, there has been a consulate in Asunción headed by Slovenian Honorary Consul Albero Boh Serafini, who participated in all the Ambassador’s meetings.
