Clarification of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Slovenia relating to the names of deportees in 1945

Ljubljana, 8 March 2006 - Some Slovene and Italian media reported that the Ministry of the Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, dr. Dimitrij Rupel, have given the mayor of Gorizia a list containing the names of 1048 deportees in post-war period, i.e. May 1945. These reports are not accurate.

In accordance with our information the list was handed over to the mayor of Gorizia, Vittorio Brancati, by the mayor of Nova Gorica, Mirko Brulc. The list was made in the museum Goriški muzej.

The mayors of Gorizia and Nova Gorica have asked the Minister about the deportees on two occasions last year. The Minister directed them to the Institute of Contemporary History and to the experts in that field. The counterparts have agreed that a list of deported persons has to be publicly accessible. In our information the list contains the names of persons arrested in May 1945 and whose destiny cannot be determined with certainty or whose death cannot be confirmed.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes the exchange of information among the competent experts on Slovene and Italian side. With the help of experts it will be much easier to determine an objective truth about the period that even after so many years casts a shadow on friendly relations between Slovenia and Italy.
