Do I need a visa to enter Slovenia?

In the visa section you will find information on whether you need a visa to enter Slovenia

List of countries the citizens of which do not need a visa to enter Slovenia (pdf, 30k).

NOTICES FROM MEMBER STATES - Information pursuant to Council Regulation (EC) No 539/2001 listing the third countries whose nationals must be in possession of visas when crossing the external borders and those whose
nationals are exempt from that requirement

How do I apply for a visa?

Normally, an application must be made in person at diplomatic missions and consular posts of the Republic of Slovenia. Documents you should include with your application:
- a valid passport and a copy of its personal information page and other relevant pages (visas, entry and exit stamps, and any other notes);
- at least one colour photograph of the applicant, sized 45mm × 35mm; the photograph should be unmounted, clear and of good quality; it should be printed on normal photographic paper – examples of suitable and unsuitable photographs, (pdf);
- the visa fee (EUR 35 or EUR 60);
- any supporting documents requested.

When submitting the application form, please make sure that:
- you have clearly and correctly filled out the form;
- you have signed the form;
- any supporting documents are originals (copies, faxes, etc. are not allowed);
- you state the duration of your stay and the number of entries in accordance with the purpose for which you are applying for a visa;
- you make your application in good time – at least 4 weeks before your travel.

If you are travelling together with children who are listed in your passport, only one visa is required. Children travelling this way are indicated on a visa sticker. In this case you are not required to fill in additional forms, but to fill in the relevant sections of your application form with your children’s details. Children listed in their parents’ passports may only travel with the parent in whose passport they are listed.

Where do I find visa application forms?

Visa application forms are available online and at all diplomatic missions and consular posts of the Republic of Slovenia where visa application forms may be submitted.

The application form is free of charge. In urgent cases, Slovene diplomatic missions and consular posts may accept an application form used locally by diplomatic missions of other EU Member States.

Where do I apply?

A list of diplomatic missions and consular posts where you can submit your visa application form (pdf, 128k).  You can find some aditional information in Table of representation (pdf, 126k).

The same information is available in the visa regime section.

Foreigners residing in countries where Slovenia has a diplomatic mission or a consular post authorised to issue visas need to apply for a visa at those representations.

Persons residing in countries where the Republic of Slovenia does not have a diplomatic mission or a consular post or there is no representation by other schengen countries in place may apply for a visa at Slovenia’s representation in another country if their stay in that country is legal. Before applying for a visa, we advise you to contact the selected representation and obtain all the necessary information on official hours, the required documents and the duration of the procedure.

You may not be able to apply for a visa at all diplomatic missions and consular posts of the Republic of Slovenia. Applications may not be submitted at missions and permanent representations of the Republic of Slovenia to international organisations nor at consulates general headed by honorary consuls or honorary consuls general.

For what documents may visas be issued?

Before entering the schengen territory, citizens of certain countries that are subject to the visa requirement must obtain a visa regardless of the purpose of their journey. Visas are issued for passports or other travel documents with which it is possible to cross borders.

The validity of the document for which a visa was issued must exceed the validity of the issued visa by at least three months. The passport must not be damaged; data and other information must not be falsified or concealed.  The passport must contain at least one empty page intended for the issuing of visas.

What supporting documents are required?

Supporting documents enclosed with the application depend on the type of visa or the purpose of the visit to Slovenia.

If a transit visa is applied for, not only the basic documents but also proof that entry into the next country is approved is required (e.g. a valid visa, a residence permit or any other relevant documents on the basis of which an alien may enter the destination country).

If an entry visa is applied for, the type and number of documents depend on the purpose of the visit to Slovenia, the level of migratory or security risk, previous stays in Slovenia, the local situation, etc.

Before applying for a visa, we advise you to consult a competent diplomatic mission or consular post (by phone or by visiting the web pages of the representation, etc.).

Documents which may be required in the visa procedure vary considerably. The following documents may be required:

- certificate of employment/schooling,

- certificate of payment of health/pension insurance for the last 3 months (issued by the relevant insurance company),

If there are other purposes of stay, information on the required supporting documents must be requested directly at a competent diplomatic mission or consular post of the Republic of Slovenia.

How long does the visa issuing procedure take?

The visa issuing procedure takes some time. Normally, it lasts a few days, but it is possible that the procedure will last longer due to the verification of data in the application or the supporting documents.

It is thus important that the visa be applied for in good time, which means at least 4 weeks before the planned departure. Due to the great number of visa applications received daily, some Slovene diplomatic missions and consular posts have introduced a system of assigning dates for the submission of applications. At present, the system is used by the embassies of the Republic of Slovenia in Bern, Skopje, Belgrade and Sarajevo. These embassies have cooperated with the so-called call centres arranging dates to applicants at the selected representation. Especially before the annual leave and holidays, it is necessary to take into account the period of waiting for a date at the embassy.

Travel health insurance

On the issuing of a visa, the diplomatic mission or consular post carrying out the visa procedure requires the applicant to submit a certificate on taking out the relevant travel health insurance. The travel health insurance cover must amount to at least EUR 30,000 and must be valid for the entire area for which the visa was issued. When deciding on the status of individual insurance companies, diplomatic missions and consular posts may also take into account previous experience also gained by diplomatic missions and consular posts of other EU Member States in the region.

Issuing of a visa

When you receive your visa, please make sure that:
- your personal details are correct;
- visa validity and the number of permitted entries enable the realisation of the planned journey;
- it is issued for the purpose for which you want to come to Slovenia;
- children listed in the applicant’s passport and travelling with the applicant are listed in the visa.

If the data contained in the visa are incorrect, you should immediately contact the official who issued the visa.

What if I am refused a visa?

In the following cases, a competent representation shall refuse to issue a visa:
- the enclosed documents are falsified or counterfeit;
- the purpose of the entry into Slovenia could not be confirmed during the procedure;
- there is a threat to the country’s law and order and security;
- the applicant’s or guarantor’s statements are untrue or altered or it is impossible to examine them;
- the applicant does not personally come to the representation carrying out the procedure.

Upon request, the applicant will be sent a written notification of the refusal of a visa. It is not possible to appeal the decision.

The applicant may always reapply for a visa, but he or she will be refused a visa again unless the circumstances have changed.

What are an alien’s obligations after arriving in Slovenia?

The entry visa holder (type C) must register his or her residence with the competent police station within 3 days. Holders residing in a hotel, camp or any other similar facility are exempt.

The visa holder may reside in schengen area in accordance with the purpose for which the visa was issued. The holder must leave the schengen territory before the expiry date of the visa; during the stay, he or she must respect the country’s laws.
