Ministra Erjavec in Shoukry

Ljubljana, 17 October 2017 – Minister Erjavec today hosted the official visit by the Foreign Minister of Egypt, Sameh Hassan Shoukry. The two ministers underlined the hope of enhancing cooperation both bilaterally and in regional/multilateral settings. They also exchanged views on developments in the Mediterranean, the Middle East and North Africa.

Ministers Erjavec and Shoukry both confirmed the wish for continued friendly relations and enhanced cooperation between Slovenia and Egypt. As to bilateral cooperation, they advocated implementing initiatives presented by the two countries during President Pahor’s official visit to Egypt last December. Trade amounting to EUR 74.1 million still falls short of the level desired. In this regard, they agreed that mutual interests require a meeting of the mixed economic commission as soon as possible.
During the visit, the ministers signed a memorandum of cooperation between the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport of the Republic of Slovenia and the Ministry of Youth and Sports of the Arab Republic of Egypt on sports, which will provide the basis for the two countries to foster exchanges of experience, guest performances, sports competitions, setting up and maintaining sports facilities, sports medicine, etc.

The talks also addressed cooperation within the Mediterranean region, with the two ministers advocating the establishment of an area of stability, security and wellbeing. Particular attention was devoted to the EU’s engagement in the Mediterranean region. They also touched on the role and importance of the Portorož-based Euro-Mediterranean University EMUNI.

They went on to discuss the situation in Libya, the wider Middle East, the Gulf, and the challenges of migration and terrorism threatening both the Mediterranean region and Europe.

The Egyptian Foreign Minister also received by President Borut Pahor and Prime Minister Dr Miro Cerar for a courtesy visit.
