ASEM Day

In celebration of the first Asia–Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit held on 1 March 1996 in Bangkok, we celebrate this day as ASEM Day.

The ASEM process includes 51 states and 2 international organisations from Asia and Europe. ASEM conducts numerous activities to further strengthen cooperation between the two regions, based on mutual respect and equality. The ASEM process, members of which account for 60% of global GDP and population, has great potential for the future. ASEM is also an irreplaceable forum, facilitating further deepening of relations between the two regions.

Every two years, alternately in Europe and Asia, leaders of ASEM process member countries meet at summits to hold debates on topical international and regional issues of common interest.

In the period between summits, the ASEM process organises ministerial meetings for individual fields of cooperation, as well as senior officials meetings, including a number of events and activities on migration, interfaith dialogue, fight against terrorism, labour and employment, ICT, communicable diseases, rural development, human rights, etc. ASEM political pillar’s activities focus on regular meetings of members of parliament (ASEP), young MPs and young politicians. The ASEM process, particularly the political pillar, is coordinated by foreign ministries of member states, while the economic pillar is coordinated by ministries of the economy and the cultural pillar mainly by the Asia–Europe Foundation (ASEF).

Slovenia has been participating in this process since 2004. The last summit was held on 18 and 19 October 2018 in Brussels. The Slovenian delegation was led by the Prime Minister, Marjan Šarec.

In December 2019, the 14th ASEM Foreign Ministers' Meeting will take place in Madrid.

Slovenia will continue to advocate the same basic values as other ASEM members, such as the rule of law, democracy and free trade, and will participate in the activities of the forum, particularly in addressing common challenges facing the international community.

You are cordially invited to visit the ASEM website, where you can find additional information about events and projects within the ASEM platform.
