Ljubljana, 13 December 2018 – Today, Ljubljana hosted bilateral consultations between Slovenia and Ukraine. Political Director/Director-General Matej Marn and his Ukrainian counterparts, Political Director Oleksii Makeiev and Director-General of the First European Directorate General Vasyl Khymynets, discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, their cooperation in international organisations and the current security situation in Ukraine.

The three officials confirmed an interest in continuing political dialogue between both countries and strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation. They expressed satisfaction with the enhanced economic cooperation in the past few years and, in this light, welcomed the meeting of the Intergovernmental Slovenian-Ukrainian Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation between Slovenia and Ukraine to be held at the beginning of 2019.

Slovenia expressed concern about the recent incident at the Kerch Strait, and reiterated its support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders. They also discussed current security and humanitarian issues related to the conflict in eastern Ukraine and called for a peaceful solution through the implementation of the Minsk Agreements.

Political Director/Director-General Marn expressed support for Ukraine in planning and implementing reforms in accordance with the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, stressing the importance of further implementation of the reform process, especially regarding the justice system and the fight against corruption.
