Minister Dr Cerar visits Berlin

Berlin, 3 December 2018 – During his working visit to Germany, Minister Dr Cerar met with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany, Heiko Maas.
 
The ministers assessed relations between Slovenia and Germany as excellent, and commended the good cooperation between the two countries both at bilateral and multilateral levels. 

Minister Dr Cerar expressed an interest in further strengthening trade in goods and services with Germany, which is Slovenia's most important economic partner, and in more intensive investment activities in Slovenia by German economic operators.

The central theme of discussions was topical issues related to the European Union. The ministers exchanged views on the future of the EU, Brexit, and respect for the rule of law, and reaffirmed the commitment of their respective countries to European values. They went on to underline the importance of unified and common responses of the Union to European, trans-Atlantic and global challenges, and agreed on closer cooperation in the preparation and implementation of the Council presidency in the framework of the Trio Germany–Portugal–Slovenia.

Special attention was devoted to migration, including the support of both countries for the Global Compact for Migration, ensuring safety on the external EU borders and cooperation with third countries. Minister Dr Cerar voiced his support for common European solutions.

Another topic of the discussions was the situation in the Western Balkan countries. The ministers agreed that a broader European perspective should be offered to the countries of the region, but they should at the same implement the necessary reforms. They exchanged positions on the current security situation in Europe and on the related situation in the Middle East, discussed the state of affairs in Ukraine, and talked about the Three Seas Initiative. Both ministers expressed support for multilateralism, which is of utmost importance in resolving global challenges.

In the framework of his visit to Berlin, Minister Dr Cerar also met with the President of the Bundestag, Dr Wolfgang Schäuble, with whom he discussed the current situation in the EU and the Western Balkans, devoting special attention to migrations and the importance of multilateralism.
