Minister Dr Cerar meets Albanian President and Prime Minister to discuss Albania’s EU accession and current situation in the region

Tirana, 27 November 2018 – As part of his official visit to Albania, Minister Dr Cerar met President Ilir Meta and Prime Minister Edi Rama. The talks with both dignitaries focused on the process of Albanian EU integration and current developments in the Western Balkan region.

 

Minister Dr Cerar welcomed the progress achieved in meeting key priority tasks that are essential for starting accession talks with the European Union. He and Prime Minister Rama confirmed positive bilateral relations, and agreed that there remain numerous unexplored opportunities for cooperation in various areas, particularly the economy and the exchange of students.

 

President Rama thanked Slovenia for supporting Albania’s EU integration process. They went on to underline that progress requires an ongoing reform process, which would not only accelerate the launch of EU-Albania negotiations, but also bring prosperity to its citizens.

 

The positive relations between the two countries were also confirmed by Albanian President Meta. He and Dr Cerar exchanged views on current developments in the region, agreeing that stability and progress in the region requires close cooperation between all stakeholders.

 

Dr Cerar went on to underline the hope that the positive political relations between the two countries would continue, especially after the planned visit of Slovenian President Borut Pahor to Albania next spring. He also assured Albania of Slovenia's further assistance and support for its reform process, as required for the start of EU accession negotiations. Minister Dr Cerar also advocated enhancing direct people-to-people contacts, particularly among youth.

 

Dr Cerar also met with the leader of the opposition Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha; they talked about the importance of cooperation between all political players for the adoption of legislation essential to the progress made with EU accession.

Dr Cerar also congratulated his hosts on the 106th anniversary of Albania’s independence, which is celebrated on 28 November.
