Director-General Marn holds bilateral political consultations with the Palestinian Assistant Minister on European Affairs Dr Jamal

Bled, 10 September 2018 – On the sidelines of the Bled Strategic Forum, Matej Marn, the Director-General of the Directorate for Common Foreign and Security Policy, met with Dr Amal A. Jadou, the Palestinian Assistant Minister on European Affairs. The talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation, the situation in Palestine, relations between Palestine and Israel, the status of the Middle East peace process and the overall situation in the region.

The two officials advocated further strengthening of bilateral cooperation in numerous fields, particularly in the economy, tourism, education and culture, as well as within international organisations. They addressed the humanitarian situation in Gaza and assessed as critical the financial crisis which the UNRWA is facing due to the recent announcement that the US would cut funding. Director-General Marn presented Slovenia's development and humanitarian assistance, including Slovenia's contribution to the UNRWA and the desalination facility in Gaza.

Views were also exchanged on the role of the European Union, USA, UN and other major actors in the Middle East peace process. The removal of the US embassy to Jerusalem, the violence of Hamas and the Israeli response to the demonstrations along the border between Gaza and Israel since March, as well as the passing of the Nation-State Law and Israel's continued illegal settlement activities in the West Bank reduce the possibilities of a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the form of a two-state solution. The talks also covered the possibilities of progress in intra-Palestinian reconciliation and Palestine's role in international forums.
