Slovenia participates in 36th UN Human Rights Council session

Ljubljana/Geneva, 11 September 2017 – The 36th regular session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) opens today in Geneva; Slovenia is a member in the 2016–2018 period. Among the topics discussed at this session, Slovenia will focus on human rights education and training, the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, and the empowerment of women and girls.


At the September session, which will continue until 29 September, member states will focus on the human rights situation in certain countries. The UNHRC will consider initiatives from a number of spheres, including the death penalty, the human rights to water and sanitation, as well as initiatives on racism and retaliatory measures against human rights activists.


Several dialogues with Special Rapporteurs, Independent Experts and the UNHRC Commissions of Inquiry are scheduled, including a dialogue with Rosa Kornfeld-Matte, Independent Expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons, and a dialogue with Léo Heller, Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation. Member states and observers can participate in interactive dialogues on the human rights situation in various countries, including Syria, Sudan, Myanmar and Ukraine. The annual discussion on integration of a gender perspective in the work of the HRC will also take place, this year on the gender perspective in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.


Together with other members of the Platform for Human Rights Education and Training, Slovenia will propose a regular annual Resolution on Human Rights Education, or in other words, the implementation of the World Programme for Human Rights Education. The resolution will focus on the implementation of the Third Phase of the World Programme for Human Rights Education.
