Andrej Šter was born on 12 June 1958 in Kranj. He is married and has two daughters. After high school, he obtained a law degree at the Faculty of Law, University of Ljubljana (1983). Between 1983 and 1999, he worked as a financial inspector at the State Accountancy Service (SDK).
In 1990, he was elected to the Assembly of the Republic on the DEMOS list. At the same time, he was appointed Secretary of the Interior and member of the Executive Committee of the Municipal Council in the Municipality of Kranj. Between 1993 and 1994, he served as State Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, and between 1994 and 1997 he was Minister of the Interior (as a member of the then Slovene Christian Democrats party; after party reorganization as a member of the Slovene People's Party).
Between 1997 and 2004, he served as State Undersecretary for Visa Policies at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and in 2004, he became the Director General for International Law and Protection of Interests at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. |
