Slovenia participates in a wide range of international development cooperation through voluntary contributions and membership fees for international organisations, especially within the UN and its agencies (e.g. UNDP, UNHCR, and UNICEF). Slovenia directs most of its development assistance to South Eastern Europe in the form of bilateral programmes and mechanisms within the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe, which takes the form of economic regeneration, institution building, training public officials, and technical assistance in EU alignment. Mention should also be made of the International Trust Fund for Demining and Mine Victims Assistance, which has now spread its operations beyond its original South Eastern Europe remit. Slovenia's assistance also reaches beyond this region, as the Slovenian instructors are involved in training the Iraqi police force. The Together Foundation trains Iraqi teachers on working with children affected by war (Austria is co-financing this programme), while the International Centre for Promotion of Enterprises (ICPE) provides training for managers aimed at strengthening enterprise in developing countries. Slovenia contributes assistance to humanitarian disaster relief, such as for the earthquakes in Algeria and Iran, the tsunami in southern Asia, and other relief operations in Afghanistan, Iraq and Ossetia.
