The department monitors the activities of NATO and works on Slovenia's operations within the organisation. It also monitors and coordinates the activities of Ministry and other state bodies within the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP). It studies the development of security processes and cooperates in Slovenian policymaking in the defence field. It prepares expert analyses and decision-making tools for areas relating to NATO, the ESDP, and international security and disarmament. It is organised into two sections.
The work of the NATO and ESDP Section covers NATO enlargement, the prevention of terrorism, NATO/EU relations, the Partnership for Peace (EAPC/PfP), the Western Balkans, NATO relations with Russia, Ukraine, the Caucasus states, and Central Asia, Mediterranean dialogue, and relations with other countries and organisations. The section's also works on fields such as civil emergency planning, and the NATO nuclear doctrine, and contributes to the development of the ESDP.
The Security and Disarmament Section deals with Slovenia's cooperation with the UN and other international organisations in security and disarmament. It focuses on security policy in Europe and the South Eastern Europe region in particular, and addresses disarmament issues in various international circles. It also prepares expert analyses and proposals for decision-making on security and disarmament issues. |
