The mission of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is to implement foreign policy and perform tasks stipulated by the Foreign Affairs Act (Ur. l. RS, No. 45/2001), as well as other regulations and acts. With its expert opinions, the Ministry participates in the planning, procedures and preparation of foreign policy matters of the Republic of Slovenia, as well as the adopting of positions by the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia and the Government of the Republic of Slovenia.
The Ministry represents the Republic of Slovenia in relation to other countries and international organisations; keeps informed about international political and economic relations, and establishes relations between the Republic of Slovenia and other countries and international organisations; conducts negotiations with foreign countries and international organisations; proposes which international agreements are to be ratified and is responsible for their registering and safekeeping; promotes and coordinates cooperation with foreign countries in the areas of policy, economy, education, culture, science and technology, among others; and is particularly concerned with protecting the interests of the Republic of Slovenia, its citizens and legal entities abroad, as well as Slovenian minorities in neighbouring countries and Slovenian communities around the world.
