14 May 2018 marks the 25th anniversary of Slovenia's membership of the Council of Europe – the oldest Pan-European organisation uniting 47 member states. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will celebrate the occasion by organising a number of events in both Ljubljana and Strasbourg.


On 22 May 2018, the Slovenian Diplomacy Day, the Ministry is organising a presentation of Andrej Novak, a journalist and diplomat, who was the first Permanent Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the Council of Europe. On this day, the Cankarjev Dom Cultural and Congress Centre will also be hosting a panel debate “Council of Europe: democracy, human rights and the rule of law at the crossroads”, which will be attended by several eminent Slovenian representatives with extensive experience and knowledge of the Council of Europe and Slovenia's activities within it.


On 14 May 2018, a joint reception of Estonia, Lithuania and Slovenia will be held in Strasbourg to mark the 25th anniversary of these countries’ membership of the Council of Europe. The event will be attended by their senior representatives, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Thorbjørn Jagland and the former Secretary General, Catherine Lalumière.
