Iraq (NTM-I)

In accordance with NATO decision made in Istanbul on 28 and 29 June 2004 and on the basis of Security Council resolution 1546 as well as the official request by the interim Iraqi authorities, NATO provides support to the Iraqi authorities in establishing key instruments for the provision of security. "NATO provides assistance in the implementation of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) training programmes. The majority of NATO members take active part by contributing to the activities in Iraq and by supporting the training programmes outside of Iraq. NATO tasks do not encompass combat tasks.

Support in the implementation of these programmes comprises important financial contributions (donations) in the form of equipment or funds for training programmes in Iraq and abroad.

Slovenia’s contribution:

On 26 October 2006, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted a decision on the continuation of Slovenia’s participation in NATO training mission (NTM-I) with 4 members of the Slovenian Armed Forces for a period of up to six months and with the possibility of rotation. In January and February 2007, direct preparations of the fourth contingent of the Slovenian Armed Forces were carried out and two members of the Slovenian army were then dispatched to the operation.

In 2005, Slovenia allocated EUR 100,000 for the training of Iraqi Security Forces (Trust Fund NATO Training Mission Iraq – TF NTM-I) and also donated weapons and military equipment in the amount of EUR 5 million to Iraq.

In September 2005, Slovenia assumed part of the expenses for the transportation of the Hungarian tanks for the Iraqi Security Forces across the Slovenian territory in the amount of EUR 172,000.

On 8 June 2006, the Government of the Republic of Slovenia adopted a decision to allocate additional EUR 100,000 to the NTM-I trust fund.
